Awnings: An awning is typically comprised of some type of fabric or other material that is supported by a structure or frame that holds the fabric up to provide shade, shelter, or protection.  The history of awnings dates back as far as ancient Egyptian and Syrian civilizations, where they were used to shade homes and market stalls.  Though the design and materials used to create awnings may have changed throughout the years, the main purpose of awnings has not.  The primary purpose of awnings is to protect buildings, stores, homes, and other structures from the elements of the weather.  Awnings protect against the sun and the rain, offer shelter, keep temperatures lower which can reduce energy costs, and protect belongings from fading.
